Abstract

This study examines the effects of the work environment and work motivation on the performance of Generation Z employees in Medan, Indonesia, addressing the limited empirical evidence on the determinants of performance among this emerging workforce. A quantitative associative design was employed using purposive sampling, involving 110 Generation Z employees. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression, t-tests, F-tests, and the coefficient of determination (R²) with SPSS Version 25. The results show that both the work environment and work motivation have positive and significant effects on employee performance. The work environment emerged as the stronger predictor, indicating that a supportive, comfortable, and collaborative workplace is particularly important for enhancing Generation Z employees’ performance. Work motivation also significantly contributes to performance by strengthening employee engagement and commitment to organizational goals. Collectively, the two variables explain 45.2% of the variance in employee performance. These findings highlight the importance of integrating supportive workplace conditions with effective motivational practices and provide empirical implications for human resource management strategies to optimize Generation Z employees' performance.
